Yamaha electric Scooter model “E01” will be tested in Malaysia! Its body size is roughly the same as the current Nmax, and it is classified as a 125cc Scooter motorcycle with a cruising range of 100 kilometres!

A PoC proof-of-concept, E01 will address issues such as range, charging method and charging time, which are the challenges for widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Malaysia has been classified as a region that can be tested on highway-equivalent roads, along with Europe, which offers tropical conditions, while Europe represents a temperate climate.

The frontal shape of the E01 adopts a large arc, which is round and dynamic. The front of the scooter is equipped with a windshield, which is flanked by slender LED direction lights. A headlight design similar to the YZF-R1. The battery which is propritery to Yamaha is covered inside the frame.

The seat cushion, it adopts a relatively flat design, but the taillights has an upward lines, and the license plate holder comes with a splash guard covering the rear wheel.

Yamaha’s claim that “human-machine functions” are the starting point, and the streamlined shape and futuristic sense of MOTOROiD are integrated into the design.

For the power section, the E01 will be powered by a 4.9kWh lithium-ion battery that powers the electric motor, delivering 8.1kW of power at 5,000rpm and 30.2 Nm of torque at 1,950rpm. The seating layout similar to the current model Yamaha NMax, which is classified as a scooter in the 150cc category. Designed for urban traffic, the E01 can travel about 100 kilometers, has a top speed of 100km/h, and offers three power modes.

The frame has been designed by Yamaha to place the large-capacity battery.

An aluminium die-casting form is used for the rear wheel arm, in which Yamaha claims to reducing weight.

The E01 has three power modes, ECO (energy saving), STD (standard), and PWR (power). The power output can be adjusted according to demand.

ECO mode is suitable for long-distance riding, will reduce battery consumption and limit the top speed to 60km/h, while standard mode is claimed to be in the range of 30-80km/h. The power mode can output the highest power of the motor, which is suitable for climbing and accelerating overtaking. In the safety direction, it has ABS braking anti-lock system and TCS tracking anti-skid control system, so that the rider can enjoy the high torque of the motor and have a safe and stable riding experience.

The E01 will offer three charging options, depending on the environment the scooter is in, and the charging socket is proprietary to Yamaha. The normal charging option using a wall charger with household current provides 5 hours of charging time and is suitable for residential areas.

Fast chargers provide an 80% one-hour charge and are designed to be installed in motorcycle dealerships and commercial buildings. A portable charger that uses 110 to 240 VAC power is designed to be carried with the E01 and has a charging time of 14 hours.

Unlike typical electric scooters that use a removable battery pack for remote charging, the E01 is designed around the battery pack, enabling Yamaha designers to include a 28-liter storage space under the seat.

With a seat height of 755mm, the E01 is designed to be accessible to all riders, and in terms of size, the E01 has an overall length of 1,930mm, compared to 1,935mm for the NMax. The E01 measuring 58 decibels at a distance of 7 meters, compared to the NMax’s 68 decibels.

Real-world testing of E01 will include data collection using 3G/LTE and web servers for analysis and future EV development. The Yamaha E01 is expected to begin PoC testing in July 2022.
