YAMAHA R9 UNLEASHED

After years of anticipation, rumors, and online teasers, Yamaha has officially revealed the full production Yamaha R9 Supersport for 2025! Complete with winglets, advanced lean-sensitive electronics, and a price tag that’ll make you think twice—just £12,250, which translates to around RM71,000. (+/- Malaysian Import Duty of 150% additional RM35,500

As a long-time sportbike fan, this news is absolutely thrilling! Since 2013, we’ve been waiting for Yamaha to slap some fairings and clip-ons onto the popular MT-09 naked triple, and finally, the day has come. Even after the arrival of the retro XSR900GP earlier this year, it seemed like we might never get a true, focused supersport machine. But Yamaha has proven us wrong, and I couldn’t be more excited to possibly get my hands on this!

Meet the Yamaha R9: A Supersport Beast

Powered by an 890cc three-cylinder CP3 engine, the new R9 will sit proudly at the top of Yamaha’s road-going sportsbike line-up in Europe, as the larger R1 superbike moves to track-only in the region. With 117.3bhp at 10,000rpm and 68.6lb.ft of torque at 7000rpm, this machine is ready to tear up the streets, all while meeting the Euro5+ emissions standards. Yamaha has fine-tuned the fuel injection, ignition timing, and gearing to ensure the R9 delivers a more thrilling top speed and overall performance than its naked sibling, the MT-09.

The engine sits in a cast-aluminium Deltabox-style frame, which Yamaha claims is their lightest sportsbike chassis yet at just 9.7kg! It’s also stiffer in every direction compared to their other three-cylinder models. With a kerb weight of 195kg, just two kilos more than the MT, the R9 is designed to feel light and responsive whether you’re slicing through corners or hitting the straights.

Track-Ready Components for the Ultimate Ride

The R9 comes with KYB suspension featuring 43mm upside-down forks with a bronze Kashima coating, offering full adjustability for rebound and compression. In the rear, a fully adjustable shock ensures the best ride both on and off the track. You’re also getting serious stopping power with Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers, paired with braided hoses and 320mm discs—exactly what you’d expect on a serious supersport machine.

For rubber, the R9 rolls on Bridgestone Battlax RS11 trackday tyres, delivering premium grip to keep you glued to the tarmac.

Aerodynamics & Downforce

The aggressive R9 plastics are inspired by the R1 and R6 Race, with pronounced winglets and a centrally-mounted LED headlight. These winglets aren’t just for show—they reduce front wheel lift by around 6-7%, increasing to 10% additional downforce mid-turn! This means you’ll stay grounded and in control, even when pushing your limits.

Lean-Sensitive Electronics & Advanced Rider Modes

The R9 is loaded with Yamaha’s latest tech, including lean-sensitive electronics powered by a six-axis IMU. Riders can switch between Sport, Street, and Rain modes, plus four additional track modes and two customizable presets. You have full control over the traction control, slide control, anti-wheelie, engine braking, and more.

Need more features? The R9 has launch control, a speed limiter, and the option to deactivate rear ABS for sliding thrills. Add to that a quickshifter for seamless up and downshifts and a five-inch TFT dash that can connect to your smartphone, allowing you to analyze lap times and riding data via Yamaha’s Y-TRAC app.

Get Ready to Ride in March 2025

If this sounds like the bike of your dreams, you’re not alone! I can already picture myself ripping through the twists and turns with the Yamaha R9. Available in stunning blue or black, this beauty is expected to arrive at European dealerships by March 2025. (our guess if the R9 ever reach Malaysia will be by parallel importer. Same fate as the R1M, MT10)

Priced at £12,250 (around RM106,500 including Malaysian Import Duty), landed excluding road tax and insurance. So, if you’re in the market for a supersport beast that blends power, performance, and cutting-edge technology—get ready for the Yamaha R9 with your pocket thick-thick!!!
