MG Goes Local: First CKD MG S5 EV Rolls Off Line in Melaka
Malaysia’s EV landscape takes another big step forward as SAIC Motor Malaysia officially begins local production of MG vehicles, marked by the first line-off of the locally assembled MG S5 EV.
The milestone ceremony took place at the PEPS-JV Assembly Facility, where the first CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit rolled off the production line — signalling the start of MG’s localisation journey in Malaysia.
A Major Step for MG in Malaysia
The event was officiated by Ab Rauf Yusoh, alongside key state officials and industry leaders including representatives from EP Manufacturing Berhad.
This development follows the October 2025 announcement of a strategic partnership between SAIC Motor Malaysia and EPMB, aimed at establishing local assembly operations and strengthening Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.
According to Managing Director Emory Qi, the CKD rollout reflects MG’s long-term commitment to localisation, bringing vehicles closer to Malaysian customers while supporting local vendors and supply chains.
More Power for the CKD Model
Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive EV platform, the locally assembled MG S5 EV gets a notable performance boost over its earlier CBU version:
151 kW power (up from 125 kW)
350 Nm torque
This translates to stronger acceleration and improved driving dynamics — positioning it as a more engaging EV to drive.
Fast Charging, Long Range
The MG S5 EV supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing:
10% to 80% charge in approximately 26 minutes
Its advanced battery layout — a horizontal ultra-thin design — helps lower the centre of gravity while improving cabin space and stability.
With a WLTP range of up to 446 km, the S5 EV is built for both daily commuting and longer-distance travel.

Production of the MG S5 EV is targeted at 120–180 units per month, with an estimated annual output of 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2026.
