The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has announced that 15 circuits have been certified as safe by the Malaysian Motor Sports Council (MAM) for the organization of motor sports. These circuits include the Sepang International Circuit, the Sepang Kart Circuit, the Morac Adventure Track, and the City Karting Shah Alam Kart Circuit. The Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, stated that this announcement is a step taken in response to an incident where a spectator was killed at a motor sports competition in Perak last December. Organizers must obtain a license from the Sports Commissioner and ensure that the circuit is inspected by MAM before hosting an event. Violations, such as using the KBS logo without permission, can result in fines up to RM500,000. The Minister also advises against building new circuits without proper financial support for maintenance.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) announced that 15 circuits have been certified safe by the Malaysian Motor Sports Council (MAM) to allow the organization of motor sports.

The circuits are the Sepang International Circuit, Sepang Kart Circuit, Morac Adventure Track (Kart Circuit), City Karting Shah Alam Kart Circuit, Speedway Plus Circuit, Kuala Selangor People’s Lumba Circuit, Tangkak Racing Track and Melaka International Motorsport Circuit (MIMC).

In addition, Unimap Racing Circuit, UUM Go-Kart Circuit, Terengganu Gong Badak Motor Circuit, Miri Track PermyJaya, APDCREW Circuit Maeps, Alyezo SpeedZone and Jempol Drag Circuit.

Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, said the announcement was an initial step taken by her side after the incident where a spectator was killed by a racing car while watching a motorsports competition in Perak, last December.

“The second step for organizers who want to make a program, they display the license that has been obtained from the Sports Commissioner (PJS).

“These two steps need to be ensured, if there are participants who want to participate in this program…if the circuit is not located in an area that has been inspected by MAM, it is a risky place,” he said in a press conference at Speedway Plus Karting Circuit, Lebuhraya Plus Subang Jaya.

Hannah said this when asked to comment on an incident involving the death of a spectator while watching the “CCT Battle of Champion” competition at the Dato’ Sagor Circuit, Kampung Gajah, Perak, last December.

Hannah, however, no further comment on the case because it is still under police investigation.

Meanwhile, Hannah said parties in violation, including using the KBS logo without permission, could be fined up to RM50,000RM500,000.

She also advised the state government or those who intend to build a circuit not to blindly develop the facility without being prepared with a strong financial budget for future maintenance and safety enhancements to the circuits.

She said the culture of building facilities or motorsports circuits without being prepared with financial support to cover the maintenance costs of a circuit in the future would only harm all parties.

“We need to stop the culture of building…building…building a circuit but not being prepared with a stable financial allocation or budget for the periodic maintenance of the circuit which will bring risks to the participants, most of whom are young people taking part in the event.

“In this matter, I as the responsible minister have the commitment to get a financial budget to empower this motorsport, which is now increasingly interested in many youths as young as four years old,” she said
