Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has confirmed agreements with former MotoGP World Champion Fabio Quartararo and rising Colombian star David Alonso to join Honda’s MotoGP programme from the 2027 season.
The major announcement comes ahead of a significant new era for MotoGP, with the championship set to introduce a new technical regulations package that will reduce engine capacity from the current 1,000cc to 850cc.
Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP World Champion, has agreed to a two-year contract with HRC beginning in 2027 and will race for the factory Honda HRC team.
The French rider made his Moto3 debut in 2015 before progressing to Moto2 and eventually making his MotoGP debut in 2019. During his rookie season, Quartararo claimed six pole positions and seven podium finishes, earning Rookie of the Year honours.
He secured his first MotoGP victory at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix before delivering a championship-winning campaign in 2021, where he recorded five victories and 10 podium finishes to become the first French rider to win the MotoGP World Championship.
To date, Quartararo has achieved 11 MotoGP victories, 32 podium finishes and 21 pole positions.
David Alonso Set for MotoGP Step-Up with Honda
Joining Quartararo at HRC will be Colombian rider David Alonso, who has signed a multi-year agreement with Honda beginning in 2027.
Alonso contested his first full Moto3 season in 2023, finishing third in the championship. He then produced a remarkable 2024 campaign, securing seven pole positions and 14 victories from 20 races on his way to winning the Moto3 World Championship.
The talented young rider stepped up to Moto2 in 2025 and is currently competing for the championship before making the move to MotoGP with Honda in 2027.
New Honda MotoGP Era Begins with 850cc Regulations
The arrival of Quartararo and Alonso coincides with one of the biggest technical changes in modern MotoGP.
From 2027, the championship will introduce new technical and sporting regulations, including a reduction in engine displacement from 1,000cc to 850cc.
HRC says both Quartararo and Alonso will work alongside current Honda MotoGP riders Johann Zarco and Diogo Moreira as the manufacturer continues development of its all-new MotoGP machine.
Honda is targeting World Championship success as it enters this new technical era, with further details regarding the structure of its 2027 MotoGP team expected to be announced at a later date.
