The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) today announced the renewal of the Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP™ Malaysia) hosting agreement for another five years, covering the period from 2027 to 2031.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, said the contract extension has received Cabinet approval and reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring Malaysia remains one of the world’s leading motorsport hubs.
MotoGP™ Malaysia was first held in 1991 before moving to the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in 1999. Over more than three decades, the event has grown into one of the nation’s most valuable sporting assets. Beyond enhancing Malaysia’s international profile, MotoGP™ Malaysia has served as a catalyst for economic growth, industry development, and the nurturing of local motorsport talent.
According to Dr. Mohammed Taufiq, the contract renewal is not merely an extension of a major international sporting event, but a strategic government decision based on three key considerations.
A Strategic National Investment
MotoGP™ Malaysia is regarded as a strategic national asset that delivers significant benefits to the tourism, hospitality, transportation, and small and medium enterprise (SME) sectors.
Economic impact studies revealed that the 2024 edition of MotoGP™ Malaysia generated approximately RM694 million in overall economic impact, created more than 4,400 job opportunities, and delivered an estimated 6.3 times return on investment (ROI) for the country.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Motorsport Ecosystem
The event continues to play a vital role in developing Malaysia’s motorsport ecosystem, including riders, technical personnel, sports management professionals, and motorsport technology specialists.
Through the Malaysian Motorsport Development (MDEV) programme, a more structured talent development pathway has been established, producing promising young riders such as Hakim Danish and Qabil Irfan, who are increasingly making their mark on the international stage.
Driving Economic Opportunities and Future Growth
MotoGP™ Malaysia also creates direct economic opportunities for Malaysians through employment, supporting industries, and year-round involvement of local businesses.
In addition, the SIC Development Master Plan 2035 is expected to attract up to RM1 billion in investments and create more than 5,000 high-impact jobs in the future, further strengthening the country’s motorsport and economic landscape.
Commitment to Malaysia’s Motorsport Future

Dr. Mohammed Taufiq reaffirmed that the Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, remains committed to strengthening Malaysia’s motorsport ecosystem.
He expressed confidence that the renewed MotoGP™ Malaysia agreement will ensure the country remains a premier global motorsport destination while creating greater economic opportunities, enhancing talent development programmes, and producing more world-class Malaysian motorsport champions in the years ahead.
